The Barcelona coach praises his former teammate amid rumours of a potential return to Camp Nou.

Lionel Messi left Barcelona after 21 years to join Paris Saint-Germain last summer. However, the Argentine icon has struggled to find his feet at the French club, managing to score only twice in his 18 league appearances.

Since PSG’s disappointing Champions League exit earlier last month, several reports have emerged of Messi’s potential return to Barcelona.

The move is highly unlikely as PSG will most likely avoid losing Kylian Mbappe and Messi in the same window. However, Barca’s manager Xavi Hernandez says he would not turn down a chance to reunite with his former teammate.

“Messi has earned having the doors open to Barca,” Xavi told a news conference ahead of El Clasico on Sunday.

“As long as I’m the coach here, if he wants to come every day to watch training or talk to the coach, what he’s given us is priceless, he’s the best player in history.

“He deserves a big tribute from the club. But today he has a contract with PSG, I think he signed for two years.”

PSG announce on Saturday that Messi will miss his side’s upcoming game against Monaco. The Barcelona legend will leave Paris in the coming days to join Argentina for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
