The Catalans have tied down one of their summer signings to a new contract.
Barcelona have extended Marcos Alonso’s contract until June 2024.
The Spaniard left Chelsea as a free agent before signing a year-long contract at Barcelona. But his performances this season have convinced the Catalans to give him a new deal.
Similar to his previous contract, the new deal includes a €50m release clause.
“We discussed this subject with Jordi Cruyff and Mateu Alemany and the club,” Xavi said on Friday, confirming Alonso’s contract renewal. “We were clear about it.
“I am very happy for this renewal. He is a great player and he is going to be very important for us in the next games and in the future.
“He is a very reliable footballer, he has been a very high-level signing for us, he is a fantastic footballer who can adapt with reliability in various positions and helps us a lot. Also, in the dressing room he is a great person.
“He has been a great signing and that he can continue with us is great news.”
Alonso has made 19 appearances for Barca so far this season, securing a place at the left-hand side of Xavi’s defensive line.
The experienced defender’s contract extension means Alejandro Balde will have consistent competition for his place in Barcelona’s lineup.
