The La Liga giants will begin upgrading Camp Nou this summer.

Barcelona will play their home matches at the Olympic Stadium – also known as the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys – in Montjuic for the 2023-24 season.

President Joan Laporta and city mayor Ada Colau appeared at a press conference at Barcelona City Hall on Thursday to announce the start of the ‘Espai Barca’ project – a move to upgrade the club’s facilities.

Barcelona will begin renovating the first and second tiers of Camp Nou this June after the council granted the club a building permit on Thursday at a cost of €6 million.

The third tier of Camp Nou will be demolished in the summer of 2023. The renovation will continue into the following season. The club will then move to the Olympic Stadium for the 2023-24 campaign. The 60,000-capacity venue is located southwest of Barcelona. It has hosted Copa del Rey finals and Spanish national team games.

The project will cost €1.5 billion and take around four years to carry out.

Barcelona could return to Camp Nou for the 2024-25 campaign, but matches would only be played at 50% capacity.

The Blaugrana will also rename their stadium to the ‘Spotify Camp Nou’ after announcing a ‘long-term’ agreement with Spotify in March. The streaming giant will sponsor the men’s and women’s teams’ shirts next season.
