The Catalans hope to have found a long-term replacement for Jordi Alba.

Barcelona are reportedly “close” to signing a new long-term contract with Alejandro Balde.

The Spain international has broken into Barcelona’s senior squad this season. Xavi Hernandez has increased Balde’s game time significantly, hoping to fully integrate him into Barca’s squad.

According to Sky Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, Balde will soon receive a five-year contract extension at Camp Nou.

Barcelona are reportedly planning to put a €500 million release clause in Balde’s new deal.

The contract extension highlights Barcelona’s plan to rebuild their defence line by finding a long-term replacement for Jordi Alba. The veteran defender will see his current contract expire in 2024, with no signs of a renewal being imminent.

Until then, Balde will have enough time to learn from Alba as he gets more playing time alongside the World Cup winner.

Speaking on his relationship with Alba, Balde has said: “When there are two in the same position, people see it as if it were a war, but no.

“In the end, if he’s okay, he’s going to make me better. And if I’m fine, I’ll do better for him. It is competition.

“But it is healthy and good. It’s not bad at all because he makes me better and that’s good.”
