The Blaugrana have confirmed the defender tested positive for COVID-19 and will now quarantine for the next 10 days.

Barcelona have announced Sergi Roberto returned a positive result from the latest round of COVID-19 tests but assured the full-back is in ‘good health’ and is in quarantine at his home in Catalonia.

Roberto hadn’t been expected to feature for Barcelona until next year anyway. He sustained a thigh injury in the 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in La Liga last month and was working on his recovery until this latest setback.

“After the PCR tests carried out this Tuesday, the first-team player Sergi Roberto has tested positive for COVID-19,” read a statement from the club’s website.

“The footballer is in good health and is isolated at home as he continues his recovery from the injury that he suffered on November 21.

“The club has informed the relevant sports and health authorities. In addition, all the people who had contact with the player have been traced to carry out the corresponding PCR tests.

“It should be remembered that Roberto suffered a tear in the rectus femoris in his right thigh at the end of the Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona game, an injury for which he will be away from the pitch for approximately two months.”

Roberto had enjoyed a decent season under new manager Ronald Koeman prior to his injury. The full-back made 10 appearances in all competitions, contributing a goal and two assists in the process.

Gerard Pique, Ansu Fati, Samuel Umtiti, and Ronald Araujo are all still on the sidelines themselves for Barcelona ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League game against Ferencvaros.
