The 33-year-old defender has missed Barcelona’s last nine games through injury and has now revealed his plans.

Gerard Pique intends to prolong his playing career for ‘three or four more years’ after receiving recognition for his career’s work at the Globe Soccer Awards on Sunday.

The 33-year-old is currently recovering from a serious knee injury sustained in late November. He’s already missed Barcelona’s last nine games in all competitions and could reportedly be out until April at the earliest.

Such a big injury, especially for a player in the twilight phase of his career, can cause uncertainty over one’s future.

But Pique is evidently optimistic about his recovery and revealed he isn’t considering retirement.

“It’s an honor for me to be here after a long career,” announced the Barcelona center-back as quoted by Marca.

“I hope to be able to keep on playing for three or four more years.”

Pique is a product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy. He has spent the bulk of his senior career at the club, making 553 appearances and winning 29 trophies in the process.

Former Blaugrana chief Joan Laporta tipped Pique last year to become the club’s president once he retires.
