Barcelona find themselves in a legal dispute with Quique Setien as the former manager claims he was not paid the remainder of his contract after he was fired last August.

The Spaniard was given his marching orders after Barcelona were humbled in a shock 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Setien was only appointed in January 2020 and joined the club on a two-and-a-half-year contract from Real Betis.

The 62-year-old had already threatened legal action against the Catalan giants last November and it could yet be followed up in court.

Now, according to Cadena Ser, Barcelona wrote an explosive letter to their former boss saying they will not pay out the remaining amount that was left on his contract.

The amount is question is believed to be around £3.5m. Barcelona’s reason for their refusal to pay the fee is because ‘he didn’t have the ability or attitude to coach the team’.

The Catalan side also claimed in the letter that Setien was merely an ‘onlooker’ and the assistant coach was the one who handled the majority of the training sessions and gave out instructions.

The Spanish publication adds that Barcelona are also prepared to stand their ground and defend their reason not to pay the fees in court.

It remains to be seen how this ends but it is a saga that could bring Barca unnecessary negative attention especially as the club continue to struggle under Setien’s successor, Ronald Koeman.
