Joao Mendes follows the footsteps of his legendary dad at Barcelona.

Ronaldinho has confirmed his son Joao Mendes has joined Barcelona’s academy.

Mendes was born in Rio de Janeiro in 2005, back when his father was playing for the Catalans. After spending a few years at Cruzeiro’s academy, the 18-year-old has decided to take the next step in his career.

“I can confirm Barcelona will sign João, Barça has always been part of my life and my heart and it will continue with my son”, Ronaldinho told RAC1.

Earlier this week, reports from Italian sources claimed Joan Laporta is a big fan of the move. The Barcelona president reportedly granted the teenage forward extra time to impress the academy coaches.

“Barca is part of my life, and with the arrival of my son in the academy, I will be more present,” Ronaldinho added.

“I have many friends within Barca, Xavi included, and I hope that they can win the league.”

Ronaldinho joined Barcelona from Paris Saint-Germain in 2003. He went on to take La Liga by storm with his incredible game-reading and technical abilities.

The former Brazil international won two league trophies and the Champions League crown with Barcelona. He also claimed the Ballon d’Or in 2005 when he was at the peak of his career at Camp Nou.
