The Blaugrana blew away a major chance to cut their deficit from the top of the table, and now trail the La Liga leaders by eight points.

FC Barcelona are “pissed off” after losing more ground in the La Liga title race and failing to pick up all three points against Cadiz after a 1-1 stalemate, says Jordi Alba.

Lionel Messi put his side on the front foot near the half-hour mark by converting the penalty, which the referee had quite readily awarded after Pedri was sandwiched in between two defenders.

The hosts thereafter lacked any presence in the final third of the pitch, and it cost them dearly. Their lead came undone in the final moments of the match when Alex Fernandez scored from the spot.

Barca had a great opportunity to cut their deficit to six points from the top of the table, with leaders Atletico Madrid having suffered a surprise defeat on Saturday.

The Catalan giants’ situation could further worsen at the end of the matchday as Sevilla, who play Osasuna later on Sunday, could rise above them in the standings.

“It’s our own fault,” Alba told Barca TV, via Sport. “We’re really pissed off.

“It’s a shame. We’re the ones to blame. It was a unique opportunity to cut the gap at the top and we weren’t able to.

“There is still a long way to go but we can’t let points like this escape. There’s no excuse. We had the chance and we haven’t won. Now we have to go again, look at things (that went wrong)… this cannot happen.

“We have to keep going, we’re Barca. We have to keep going in all three competitions, but this was a shame today. We had a unique chance. The team tried.”
