The Uruguayan has shown Barcelona what they’ve lost this season in a similar manner to what Ronaldo has done since leaving Real Madrid.

Barcelona are missing Luis Suarez as Real Madrid did after Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit, says former Atletico Madrid and Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan.

Suarez, who was shown the door at Camp Nou last summer due to his age, has been in brilliant form. He has already scored 16 goals in 21 league games for his new side Atletico Madrid, with only former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi outscoring him.

The 34-year-old’s exploits have helped Atletico move into a five-point over Barcelona in the Spanish league standings and with a game in hand.

“Barcelona are missing Luis, it’s like when Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid,” Forlan told AFP.

“It was not just Cristiano Ronaldo leaving, one of the best players in the history of football. It is 50 goals leaving as well.

“So if you sell a player like Ronaldo or Suarez, you have to replace them with two players and then there’s risk because they have to adapt.

“As soon as Cristiano left it was never going to be easy for Real Madrid and for Barcelona now it’s the same.”

Of course, Real Madrid crumbled following Ronaldo’s departure for Juventus in the summer of 2018. Their historic run of three successive Champions League titles ended, and they finished 19 points behind Barcelona in the 2018/19 LaLiga campaign in a distant third.

Two managers tried to overturn things and failed before Zinedine Zidane returned as manager in March 2019.
