The Catalans are open to selling a crucial midfielder to balance their wage bill.
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has reportedly been given the green light to leave the club amid renewed links with Manchester United. The 26-year-old is reportedly dissatisfied with Barcelona’s current situation as their struggles on and off the pitch continue.
De Jong’s potential move to Manchester United dates back to 2022 when former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, now at Old Trafford, made a £70m bid for the midfielder. Despite being close to sealing the deal, De Jong opted to stay at Barcelona at the time.
Now, 18 months later, Relevo reports a change in the midfielder’s stance. Both the player and Barcelona are said to be willing to part ways this summer, with the club looking to offload one of their top earners.
Barca’s hierarchy is reportedly open to cashing in on the midfielder, who still holds a high market value. A move to Manchester United would reunite De Jong with his former Ajax boss, Erik ten Hag, under whom they enjoyed success from 2017 to 2019.
