The Argentine icon left Barca after last summer after the club couldn’t raise enough funds to extend his contract.

Joan Laporta has expressed his desire to return Lionel Messi to Barcelona before his retirement.

Messi left Barca after 21 years last summer, joining Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent.

The Argentine superstar was on the verge of signing a new deal at Camp Nou. But financial issues prevented the club from registering Messi’s new contract.

“It’s an aspiration that I have as president and I would like it to happen,” Laporta said of Messi’s possible return. “Messi’s time at Barça did not end as we would have liked. I was co-responsible for his ending at the club.

“I believe that it is a provisional end and that we will will make this aspiration a reality.

“We have a clear moral debt with him and I would like the end of his career to be with the Barca shirt, being applauded by every pitch he goes to.”

Messi’s contract at PSG runs until 2023, with the French side having the option to extend his stay for another 12 months.

According to several Spanish sources, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is not on good terms with Barca’s current management after his exit.

However, Barca’s hierarchy have reportedly tried to rebuild their relationship with Messi over the past few months.
