After a four-year-long wait, Barcelona have finally claimed their 27th LaLiga Title. This triumph marks the team’s first win since Lionel Messi’s departure in 2021.
Barcelona secured the LaLiga crown on Sunday with a commanding 4-2 win over bitter local rivals Espanyol, marking their first title since 2019.
Robert Lewandowski’s first-half contribution of two goals, bookended by Alex Balde’s strike, propelled Barca in front. Jules Kounde added a fourth goal in the second half. This emphatic victory put Barca 14 points above second-placed Real Madrid in the standings with four games remaining. It brings their tally of LaLiga titles to 27, second only to Madrid’s 35. This is also the first trophy clinched under the leadership of Xavi Hernandez.
“It is a magnificent feeling, one of getting the job done well,” the Barcelona manager said as per ESPN.
“This started in July. It is 10 months of hard work and sacrifice. It felt like the moment tonight. There had been criticism about giving the players five days off which didn’t sit well, but it served us well.
“The fans deserve this. The players, too. There has also been a titanic effort from the president to build a strong squad. Winning the title with four games left shows we have been much stronger than the rest [of the league], much stronger. It is a huge credit to the team.
“I am very happy, very proud to win the league title.”
Last season, Barcelona finished 13 points behind champions Real Madrid in a distant second. It was their first campaign without Lionel Messi. The Argentine left the club in 2021 to join Paris Saint-Germain.
For this term, Xavi’s side have four games coming up before the summer break. First up is a home game against Real Sociedad at home this Saturday.
