Barcelona will have to deal with the absence of another key player in the coming weeks.

Ronaldo Araujo suffered a hand injury during Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Linares Deportivo on Wednesday. The defender came off the pitch at the beginning of the second half and underwent further tests on Thursday.

The player has broken the second and third metacarpal bones of his right hand. Barcelona have announced the Argentine will undergo surgery to rectify the problem.

The club’s official statement reads: “First-team player Ronald Araujo has fractured the second and third metacarpal bones in his right hand.

“Doctor Xavier Mir will perform surgery tomorrow under the supervision of the club’s medical services. An update will be provided after the operation.”

Araujo has been a regular starter for Barcelona this season, playing in 21 of their 26 games. His possible absence of four weeks will be a massive blow to Barca’s backline. However, he was not the only Blaugrana player that suffered an injury on Wednesday.

Frenkie de Jong also left the pitch with a calf injury in the second half. The full extent of the Dutchman’s injury is unknown, but he will most likely miss Saturday’s game against Granada.

Following the game against Granada, Barcelona will face Real Madrid in the Super Cup final on Wednesday.
