Julián Araujo has arrived at Camp Nou on a four-year deal.
Julián Araujo, the LA Galaxy and Mexico national team’s right-back, has finally secured his much-desired move to FC Barcelona. The 21-year-old has set a club record transfer to the Spanish giants, reportedly worth $4 million. The transfer was over two weeks past the January window closing.
Initial paperwork was filed 18 seconds late due to a supposed computer error, then FC Barcelona’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was denied. However, the club and player did not give up and persevered. The Galaxy will retain a sell-on percentage of the transfer fee if Araujo moves to another club.
The teenager will reportedly train with Barça B before officially registering for the first team’s 2023-24 campaign. The club will most likely compete in the UEFA Champions League next year, sitting first in the LaLiga table above Real Madrid.
Julián Araujo’s rise has been meteoric. He quickly established himself as one of the most promising talents in MLS upon making his professional debut with the Galaxy as a 17-year-old in 2019. He departs with one goal and 20 assists in 100 regular-season games for LA.
The LA Galaxy Academy development side is part of the club’s evolution. As head coach and sporting director Greg Vanney puts it, “We are going to help develop players who can play at the biggest clubs in the world, but can also help the LA Galaxy win championships.” Julián’s move to FC Barcelona is a testament to the Academy’s success.
Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, has often played Jules Kounde (out of position) at right back this season. The club also has US international Sergiño Dest loaned out to Serie A powerhouse club AC Milan. This explains the importance of Araujo’s transfer, as he will add depth and competition to the right-back position.
