In an unprecedented turn of events, Barca’s Chief Executive Officer plans to step down from his role just seven months after his appointment.

Barcelona CEO Ferran Reverter has announced his intention to resign from his role for ‘personal and family reasons’.

The club confirmed Reverter’s plans on Tuesday morning, stating the CEO has already informed president Joan Laporta.

“Ferran Reverter has informed FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta today of his wish to resign from his position as Chief Executive Officer for personal and family reasons,” read a statement.

“This resignation will come into effect as soon as the club has appointed a new CEO.”

Why did Reverter leave?

The decision comes as a surprise, considering Reverter only took up the position last July after Laporta won a second term as president.

In Barcelona’s press release, the club credited him for leading the ‘2021-2026 Strategic Plan’ that has restructured their debt, approved the ‘Espai Barca’ – a project to revamp their facilities – and reduction of the wage bill.

According to various reports in Spain, Reverter didn’t approve of Barcelona’s proposed Spotify sponsorship deal. He considered it a strategic error. But the German made no mention of these reports in his farewell statement.

“It is now almost a year since I left Germany to return to Barcelona for family reasons,” said Reverter.

“These have been passionate months and I thank the president for his trust and, above all, his enthusiasm and capacity for leadership that means FC Barcelona how has a first-class executive team that is able to reposition Barca as a world leader. Personally, I have put in much effort and dedication during these months, but I now wish to focus on the reason why I returned to Barcelona, which is to spend more time on personal and family projects.”

Barcelona return to action on Sunday for a short trip to Catalan rivals Espanyol in a La Liga match.
