The Barcelona star hobbled off the field during the La Liga fixture against Atletico Madrid. This one looks quite unpleasant.

This could be a serious dilemma for Ronald Koeman and Barcelona. The Blaugrana defender Gerard Pique sustained a nasty blow after colliding with Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa. Leo Messi’s side was in need of the three points to help lift themselves in La Liga standings. However, Barca conceded right before half-time with a judgment error from Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Things just could not go Barcelona’s way on Saturday evening following Pique’s ugly incident. In the 62nd minute, the Spanish defender limped off the field to switch for Sergino Dest. It was an unfortunate moment for Pique as he crossed paths with Correa. The Atletico star collapsed right on his knee after a hassle with Jordi Alba.

It appeared that Pique took the Argentina international’s entire weight on his right leg. And the Spain international immediately received temporary treatment at Wanda Metropolitano. Nevertheless, the center-back lifted himself up. When he realized it was serious, he needed assistance out of the pitch by two Barcelona officials. Moreover, the video footage clearly shows that Pique was unable to put pressure on his affected foot.

A plague of injuries.

This has been a tough season for elite clubs around Europe, with numerous injury issues. Concerns will arise hereafter, as several Barca defenders are out on the treatment table. As it stands, Samuel Umtiti and Ronald Araujo are absent from the squad list for the Catalunya giants. As a matter of fact, Koeman called up Oscar Mingueza from the B team to aid Barcelona’s defensive compartment. Nonetheless, Messi & co. played with Clement Lenglet and Pique in the central region.

The club will now expect Pique to be out of action for the rest of the season. Because it appears as if he has broken his ligaments. Barcelona will be back in the Champions League on Tuesday next week as they visit Dynamo Kyiv. And we will have to wait and see how Koeman tackles this problem ahead of a difficult campaign.
