The French star is on the verge of securing a permanent transfer back to Atletico Madrid after his disappointing spell at Barcelona.
Griezmann re-joined Atletico on a two-year loan last summer. Atletico reportedly agreed to sign the Frenchman for €40m if he had played in 50% of their total game time during the loan.
Having starred as a regular starter during the last campaign, Griezmann was going to hitting the mark this season.
However, Atletico’s decision to limit his game time forced Barca to return to the negotiating table for a new deal.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Catalans have agreed to sell the French forward for €20m plus add-ons. The Sky Sports journalist claims Griezmann himself has been pushing to stay at Atletico.
Diego Simeone will most likely return Griezmann to his lineup after the new deal. The 31-year-old has mostly played as Atletico’s super-sub this season, providing them with a few crucial goals.
On the other hand, Barcelona receive a decent fee for Griezmann while writing him off their bloated wage bill.
Having offloaded high-earners such as Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho, the Catalans seem to be on their way to fully recovering from their well-documented financial issues.
It would be interesting to see whether they would push to return Lionel Messi to Camp Nou upon his contract expiry at Paris Saint-Germain next summer.
