Girona reclaimed La Liga’s top spot with a sensational victory against their Catalan rivals.

Girona defeated Barcelona 4-2 in their La Liga game on Sunday. Michel’s side have left behind their underdog days to establish a place among the league’s elite.

What happened?

Girona’s bright start to the game resulted in their first goal through Artem Dovbyk in the 12th minute. However, Barca were quick in their response, with Robert Lewandowski finding an equalizer only seven minutes later.

The hosts maintained the pressure on Girona’s backline to score the second goal. But it was the visitors who restored their lead through Miguel Gutierrez’s excellent finish from the edge of the box in the 40th minute.

Barcelona started their efforts to get back into the game as soon as the second half started. However, Girona managed to keep their opponents at bay with a deadly combination of solid pressing and swift counter-attacks.

The devastating blow to Barcelona came in the 80th minute when Valery Fernandez doubled Girona’s lead after dribbling past Jules Kounde inside the box.

Barcelona’s pressure paid off when they returned to the game with a 92nd-minute goal from Ilkay Gundogan. However, Girona completed their brilliant performance by scoring another goal only three minutes later. Cristhian Stuani headed a precise cross from Savio into the back of the net as Girona celebrated a crucial victory at Barcelona’s Olympic Stadium.
