The Catalans replaced arch-rivals Real Madrid at second place in the table after edging out in the tight contest at Camp Nou.
FC Barcelona took advantage of Real Madrid‘s defeat to move level on points with them, climbed up to second in La Liga table, Lionel Messi hit another goalscoring milestone – it was a pretty good Sunday for the Cules.
It was – no prizes for guessing – Messi who broke the deadlock. The Argentine produced a moment of magic as he whipped in a delightful free-kick up and over the wall and into the top-right corner of the net from 25 yards out.
Messi has now scored 49 times from free-kicks in his illustrious career and has taken his tally to 650 goals for Barcelona.
Four minutes after the break came the equalizer for Athletic Bilbao when Jordi Alba, in a sliding attempt to push it away, put the ball in his own net.
Antoine Griezmann netted the winner at the 74-minute mark, sending in a powerful shot on Oscar Mingueza’s pass.
