Lionel Messi is set to win the prestigious award for a staggering eighth time.

Lionel Messi has defeated Erling Haaland to win the 2023 Ballon d’Or, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Messi already holds the record for most Ballon d’Ors in football history with seven awards. Another legendary moment now awaits the Argentine icon, who is set to celebrate his eighth Ballon d’Or on Monday.

Earlier this month, the Spanish newspaper SPORT claimed that Messi has claimed enough votes to land the prestigious award. However, as with almost every football news, a confirmation from Romano is needed to dispel any doubts.

On Wednesday, the Sky Sports journalist wrote on X (Twitter): “Understand all the indications are set to be confirmed but Messi will be the final winner once again. Official decision to be unveiled Monday night in Paris.”

Messi finally reached his dream of leading Argentina to the World Cup in Qatar last year. The former Barcelona star also claimed the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s best player.

However, many observers believe that Erling Haaland has a stronger case to win the Ballon d’Or ahead of Messi. The Norway international enjoyed a phenomenal debut season with Manchester City, claiming a historic treble while winning a number of individual awards.

Fans can watch the Ballon d’Or ceremony on L’Equipe’s YouTube channel and website.
