Let’s take a look at the player ratings from the FIFA Women’s World Cup match between Australia and Nigeria at the Suncorp Stadium.
On Thursday, Australia and Nigeria played their second game of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Australia arrived in Milton as the hot favorites. The Group B leaders knew three points would secure a knockout spot. But Nigeria, who held Canada to a 0-0 draw in their opener, had their own agenda. The Australia vs Nigeria game was arguably the biggest match of the day, and it didn’t disappoint.
The Super Falcons put in another excellent defensive display. Australia dominated possession and had far more shots, yet struggled to score. They finally broke the Nigerian defense right before the break when Emily van Egmond scored. However, just moments later, Uchenna Kanu equalized to level the scoreline at 1-1. Osinachi Ohale and substitute Asisat Oshoala then scored second-half goals to put Nigeria into a two-goal lead.
Alanna Kennedy did head in a goal back for Australia in the 10th minute of added time. But it was too little, too late. Nigeria held on to snatch a famous 3-2 win over the World Cup co-hosts.
Following their success, Nigeria have snatched first place in Group B. One point in Monday’s game against Ireland will secure a spot in the World Cup’s knockout stages. On the flip side, Australia have to win at all costs when they play Canada in Melbourne on the same day.
