The Rojiblancos boss says the gesture will disrespect Atletico fans in their home stadium.
Diego Simeone has confirmed Atletico Madrid will not make a guard of honour for Real Madrid in their upcoming game.
Atletico failed to defend their La Liga title, with Real Madrid claiming the trophy last week. The two Spanish giants will face off in the Madrid derby on Sunday.
It is a tradition for teams to applaud the champions when they enter the pitch. However, Simeone says his side will refuse to put on the display out of respect for their fans.
Speaking in a press conference, the Argentine said: “The reality is what the club said in a press release, explaining perfectly, congratulating Real Madrid above all, the footballers, the technical staff, because they have done a great job.
“We have respect for Madrid but more for our people.
“I don’t know if this is represented in other world championships. Each society is different. The Spanish one has this guard of honour for their rivals, [but] as an example, where I come from I don’t use it. We live differently too.”
Atletico sit fourth in La Liga, three points above Real Betis, who are pushing to secure a Champions League qualification. Let’s see if Simeone’s side can hold on to their top-four spot until the end of the season.
