Enrique Cerezo keeps the door open for Lionel Messi in case he wishes to team up with a former partner in crime at Atletico Madrid.

In a surprising turn of events, Luis Suarez completed a switch from FC Barcelona to Atletico Madrid earlier this month.

The Uruguayan marksman, who was part of one of the deadliest and most successful trio in history, had been one of Barca’s most reliable players over the years.

More than the club’s decision to sell him in the first place, perhaps the more surprising part was their decision to sell their third-best goalscorer of all time to a direct rival.

Lionel Messi had also been heavily linked with a move away from Camp Nou previously this summer. His exit seemed imminent at one point, with Manchester City suggested as his next destination, but the Argentine decided to stay put out of fear of going in a legal battle with his team.

However, he may still depart Barcelona when his current contract expires next year, and the Atletico Madrid president has already made known of his interest in signing Messi.

Enrique Cerezo said on Cadena Cope: “In life, if you want something… If Leo Messi wants to play with Luis Suarez, I tell him the same thing that is said with nougat: ‘Let him come home for Christmas’.

“With desire, anything is possible.”
