A Real Madrid player contracted the coronavirus recently, and now a player in their rival team is diagnosed with the same.
Atletico Madrid midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia has tested positive for COVID-19, the club confirmed on Friday.
Kondogbia, who joined Atletico from Valencia in the summer of 2020, is currently under quarantine away from the rest of the squad.
The La Liga champions released the 28-year-old’s diagnosis on their social networks a few minutes after the start of their friendly match against Numancia.
Fortunately, none of the other players in Diego Simeone’s squad come under the influence of the widespread virus.
An official statement by the club read: “Our player is currently isolating, in compliance with the health authorities’ guidelines.
“Our squad, coaching staff and members of the expedition have undergone antigen tests on Friday morning ahead of the trip to El Burgo de Osma, where we will face Numancia in our first friendly game of the summer. All tests came back negative.
“However, Geoffrey Kondogbia has undergone an additional PCR test since he intended to travel in the next two days – which our team has off – and the country of destination required such a test. In this case, he has tested positive for COVID-19.
“Immediately after learning of this result, our midfielder was isolated in strict compliance with the health authorities’ guidelines.”
