The La Liga leaders have their troubles doubled as a second player just a day after the first one has been forced to self-isolate.
Atletico Madrid have announced that Moussa Dembele has tested positive for coronavirus.
Dembele will now observe entered a period of self-isolation at home in line with La Liga health protocol.
Signed from Lyon in January, the 24-year-old Frenchman now not only will have to wait longer for his Atleti debut but also faces the risk of missing the Champions League Round of 16 first-leg clash with Chelsea on February 23.
The report on the club website read: “Our staff underwent PCR tests yesterday as recommended by La Liga, in addition to the first weekly antigen tests that appear in their protocol, and Moussa Dembele has had a positive result for Covid-19 in the PCR test.
“The forward remains isolated at home in strict compliance with the recommendations of the health authorities and La Liga protocol.”
The news spell trouble for manager Diego Simeone who is now without another option in attack as Joao Felix was also found infected by the widespread virus on Wednesday.
Furthermore, it is an anxious sign that the deadly virus has spread throughout the first-team camp. Other than their record signing, Atletico also have Yannick Carrasco and Mario Hermoso in quarantine.
