Atletico defeated their city rivals with a brilliant performance on home soil.

Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid 3-1 in their La Liga game on Sunday. Alvaro Morata scored twice as Atletico edged out their opponents at Wanda Metropolitano.

What happened?

Similar to their last two La Liga games, Real Madrid conceded an early goal. This time, Morata stunned the visitors with a fifth-minute header to put Atletico ahead.

Real Madrid pushed hard for an instant equalizer, but it was Atletico who doubled their lead through Antoine Griezmann in the 18th minute.

Having conceded the second goal, the visitors established their dominance over the possession. They finally managed to get back into the game when Toni Kroos found the back of the net with a powerful low shot from the edge of the box.

Atletico started the second period with another early goal, ruining Real Madrid’s plans right off the bat. Another cross by Saul and another header from Morata made it 3-1 for the hosts only a minute after the break.

Real Madrid spent the second half looking for a way to penetrate Atletico’s solid defence. But they lacked enough attacking edge to score again.
