The league leaders saw the defending champions close in on them following a share of the spoils in the derby on Sunday night.

Diego Simeone laughed off suggestions that Atletico Madrid are going to run away with the La Liga title after the 1-1 stalemate with Real Madrid.

Atletico are going strong in their pursuit of an 11th league title and their first one since the 2013/14 season as they sit comfortably atop the table.

However, their lead further narrowed this weekend as they dropped two valuable against their city rivals.

Los Rojiblancos allowed Real Madrid to cut the gap between them to five points while FC Barcelona are also in touching distance of them with only three points separating the two sides, though they have a game in hand on both.

Simeone said, via Marca: “I leave here with loads of important things at the moment – the team’s play, the points total that everyone has put a massive effort in to during a season where everyone was thinking that we were going to win the league by 20 points. I don’t know what they were thinking.

Atletico Madrid were in formidable form early in the season but have faltered as of late.

“It’s going to be a very difficult road until the end for everybody,” added Simeone. “We want to improve on last season and we’ll go on that track.”
