Real Madrid claimed a much-needed victory to continue chasing Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table.

Real Madrid defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-0 in their La Liga game on Sunday. A hard-fought battle saw the Blancos bounce back from their disappointment in the Super Cup.

Benzema with a volley!

Bilbao started off by pressing high off the pitch, winning most of the battles in midfield. The hosts even made a few half-chances to break the deadlock but it was Real Madrid who scored the first goal of the night.

Following a header from Marco Asensio inside Bilbao’s box, Benzema volleyed the ball into the back of the net with a powerful shot.

The goal saw Bilbao push for an instant equalizer but Real Madrid managed to hold on to their defensive integrity.

The hosts once again went on the offensive at the beginning of the second period. But, this time, Real Madrid kept them off their box with their fatal counter-attacks.

The Blancos then retook control of the game in the final 20 minutes. But Carlo Ancelotti’s men had to wait until the 90th minute to double their lead.

An assist from Rodrygo found Toni Kroos, who made it 2-0 for the guests with a fantastic low shot.

The goal wrapped up a crucial victory for Real Madrid. The Blancos keep their three-point gap to Barcelona, who lead the La Liga table.

Ancelotti’s men will host Real Sociedad in their next league game.
