Spurs are said to be ramping up their efforts to land the talented defender as they look to bolster their backline ahead of the new season.

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini has issued a fresh update on the Cristian Romero situation amid the player’s links to Tottenham.

Romero has firmly established himself as one of the best defenders in Serie A during his loan spell at Atalanta, who signed him from Juventus on a two-year agreement with an option to buy.

It has been suggested the 23-year-old is now ready to take the next step in his career and is keen on moving to the Premier League.

Talks between Tottenham and Atalanta have reportedly advanced in recent weeks over his transfer, although the clubs are yet to reach an agreement on the fee.

Amid all the speculations, the La Dea manager was asked to comment on the situation following his side’s 2-1 pre-season friendly win over Pordenone on Saturday.

“I haven’t actually seen Romero yet, as he’ll be back on Monday,” responded Gasperini, according to Football Italia.

“We’ll see what his position is, then of course there is a negotiation in progress between the two clubs.

“We’ll see what the evaluations will be if he does leave.”
