Aston Villa are keen to sign Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho on a loan deal this winter.
Barcelona continue their efforts to balance their wage books in the January transfer window. They must offload some of their top earners in order to register the contract of their new signing Ferran Torres.
Philippe Coutinho is certainly among a group of players who are on the club’s sell list. The Brazilian has failed to force his way back into the Barcelona lineup under Xavi Hernandez. The abundance of talented forwards in Barca’s squad has convinced them to let the Brazil international go.
On the other hand, Coutinho himself is willing to play at the next year’s World Cup. The forward knows his game time at Barcelona will not increase after the return of their several injured players. Newcastle have monitored Coutniho’s situation for a long time, but another Premier League club have now joined the race.
According to Cope, Aston villa are pushing to secure the signing of Coutinho on a loan deal. The Spanish source claims the Villa are in negotiations with Barcelona over a six-month loan.
The 29-year-old also has offers from Brazil, but Goal reports he is leaning toward a Premier League return. In case of a move to Liverpool, Coutinho will reunite with his former teammate Steven Gerrard who coaches the Villa.
Gerrard’s side want to compensate for Jack Grealish’s absence in their midfield and see Coutinho as a suitable option.
From a sporting point of view, it will be interesting to see Gerrard trying to reinvent Coutinho’s career. However, the Brazilian’s high wages might prevent the clubs from reaching an agreement.
