The Red Devils suffered an unexpected defeat against their 14th-placed opponents.

Aston Villa defeated Manchester United 3-1 in their Premier League game on Sunday. A composed display from the hosts saw United suffer their first defeat in ten games at Villa Park.

Ronaldo captains Red Devils!

Similar to Man Utd’s last two games, Erik ten Hag started Cristiano Ronaldo up front. The Portuguese superstar also wore his side’s armband due to the absence of his country-man Bruno Fernandes.

United’s midfield line, however, failed to impress without Fernandes. Daniel van de Beek was rarely effective behind Ronaldo, while Casemiro struggled to find his feet in the game early on.

Leon Baily opened the scoring for the hosts only the seventh minute into the game before Lucas Digne made it 2-0 shortly after.

Digne’s brilliant free-kick put more pressure on the guests to push for a goal before half-time. The Red Devils finally got back into the game through Jacob Ramsey’s own goal just before the break.

Following a poor clearance from Ramsey, Luke Shaw rifled a powerful shot which found the back of the net after a significant deflection off Ramsey’s body.

United pushed hard to escape the defeat in the second period. But Villa held them at bay by appearing more and more dangerous in the counter-attacks.

The victory marks a perfect return to the Premier League for Unai Emery, who took charge at Aston Villa earlier this week.

The two sides will lock horns again when they lock horns in a Carabao Cup clash at Old Trafford on Thursday.
