Back in December, Mikel Arteta took over a club in crisis. Eight months later, Arsenal look like they are on the right path under the Spaniard.
Mikel Arteta had it all to do when he was appointed Arsenal manager back in December.
The Spaniard took over from compatriot Unai Emery who left the club in a mess. Under the ex-boss, the Gunners suffered their worst start to a season in 28 years.
Coupled with that, echoes of disunity were all over the place. The language barrier was an issue. Some reports claimed a number of Arsenal stars were not in agreement with Emery at the time.
Mikel Arteta came in and steadied the ship. The Gunners might have finished in eighth place but there was more to their game. Perhaps the biggest sign of progress was their record 14th FA Cup triumph.
Looking back at a difficult season, the Arsenal boss explained how he brought back a good feel at the Emirates.
“The first thing was that I got everyone together, the staff and the players, and I told them what I thought about them and why this wasn’t working,” Arteta told Arsenal Digital.
“If we were going to continue like this, it was never going to work.”
“The first thing we had to do was get back all together with the same agenda and with the same intentions. The foundations have to be really strong in order to create something and we started to do that. I explained my view of how we could do it, we could change things and monitor them daily, but we started to apply some things and they really started to work.
“We had to create the right culture for our club and it has to be an environment that first of all everybody has to respect each other, that we have to work together and we have to express the passion and how we lucky we are to be where we are. That’s the first one to start with.”
Arteta is now looking to build on the club’s FA Cup triumph for more success next season.
