Mikel Arteta, who worked under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City before becoming the Arsenal manager, revealed what the Catalan had to say.

Pep Guardiola congratulated Mikel Arteta over Arsenal’s recent victory over his Manchester City side and described the Gunners as a ‘terrific team’.

Before the international break, Arsenal grabbed a 1-0 victory over City. Gabriel Martinelli’s late strike sealed the points at the Emirates. It was Arsenal’s first win over City in the Premier League since October 2015 after 15 games (D2 L13).

The result also marked the third time Arteta oversaw a win over Guardiola in 11 meetings (D0 L8).

“I talked with him [Guardiola] after the game,” Arteta said on the Men in Blazers podcast.

“It is always like this, it’s very tense, it’s very emotional, a lot is going on in that moment, but after that, the relationship remains intact.

“I lost much more than I won against him but, to be fair, in the last two games when we won the Community Shield and now in the league, the feeling is totally different. [He said] ‘Congratulations, you guys are a terrific team’.”

Arsenal are two points above City in second place in the Premier League, having managed 20 points in eight matches.

The Gunners return to action on Saturday away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
