Mikel Arteta has achieved far beyond expectations since taking over as Arsenal manager, says Gary Neville.

Gary Neville has heaped praise on the impact of Mikel Arteta since he joined the Gunners as head coach.

The Spaniard was appointed Gunners boss in December 2019 after his compatriot Unai Emery was dismissed.

At the time, Arsenal found themselves in a bad state on and off the pitch. However, Arteta looks to have steadied the ship to a great deal.

The ex-City assistant took over with his side in tenth place in the Premier League, but they finished eighth at the end of the season. In that period, the Gunners have won Manchester City, Manchester United and also won Liverpool twice.

Most remarkable is the fact that Arteta also led Arsenal to a record 14th FA Cup triumph after defeating Chelsea in the finals last season.

Gary Neville is pleased with the Arsenal manager and believes he is doing more than expected at the club.

“I think Mikel Arteta is punching above his weight,” Neville said on his podcast.

“He is going above and beyond the players he has. The shape and the organisation, things we have criticised Arsenal for in the past, is good.”

“They are not finishing in the top four like Arsene Wenger used to get criticised for but they look like a team which is more cohesive. It has continued from the end of last season and he is doing a great job.”

“I just think Mikel Arteta would love that £150 million that Frank Lampard has got this summer.”

Arsenal have won both of their Premier League games so far this season. However, a real test awaits them when they take on reigning champions Liverpool next Monday.
