One of English football’s most infamous rivalries resumes on Sunday evening as Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur lock horns for the 202nd north London derby.

Both clubs haven’t lived up to expectations in the 2020/21 campaign. Tottenham have struggled to keep up their early-season promise in seventh-place in the standings, while consistency has eluded Arsenal almost all season down in 10th.

Another close and possibly low-scoring affair, therefore, could be on offer at the Emirates. Arsenal can make life tough for their bitter rivals, but Spurs arguably have the momentum for a fixture where draws is a common theme.

Arsenal Form & Stats

A 3-1 Europa League win over Olympiacos on Thursday extended Arsenal’s unbeaten run to four games in all competitions (W3 D1). The improved form has been welcome, but a couple of high-profile defensive errors have led to unnecessary goals being conceded. A repeat must be avoided on Sunday.

The Gunners don’t have a great record in the north London derby either, having failed to win their last five derbies (D2 L3). They’ve only lost twice in 35 home league games against Spurs (W19 D14), though, and have shown improved form at the Emirates recently.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, meanwhile, has scored eight goals in his last 10 appearances in all competitions. He and Alexandre Lacazette have each scored nine times in the Premier League. The duo could, therefore, become the fifth and sixth Arsenal players to reach double figures in each of their first four league campaigns for the club. Ian Wright, Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, and Olivier Giroud have previously done this.

Key Team Stats
  • On a 4-match unbeaten run in all competitions (W3 D1).
  • BTTS in 6 of their last 7 games in all competitions.
  • Lost only 2 of their 35 home league games against Tottenham (W19 D14).
  • Never gone six games without a victory against Tottenham in all competitions.
  • Mikel Arteta hopes to avoid becoming the first Arsenal manager to lose his first three north London derbies.
  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored 8 goals in his last 10 appearances in all competitions.

Tottenham Form & Stats

Spurs hope to bag three consecutive league wins over Arsenal for the first time since 1974. It will be a tough ask, but the club’s fine run of form, along with Jose Mourinho’s superb record against the Gunners, suggests it’s possible.

The Lilywhites have suffered away from home recently, though. Despite winning their first four away league games, which included a 5-2 win against Southampton and a 6-1 triumph over Manchester United, Spurs have won just twice on the road since. They’ve even lost three of their last four trips in the league (W1).

Mourinho, meanwhile, expects Harry Kane to be available. The English striker has been in formidable form this season and has a terrific record against Arsenal. Another player on the up is Gareth Bale, who appears to have rediscovered his confidence and fitness in recent weeks.

Key Team Stats
  • On a 5-match winning run in all competitions.
  • Won only 2 of their last 9 away league games (D3 L4).
  • Scored only 10 goals in their last 11 away league games.
  • Harry Kane and Song Heung-min have either scored or assisted 37 of Spurs’ 46 league goals.
  • Harry Kane has scored 11 goals in 13 appearances against Arsenal in all competitions.
  • Gareth Bale has had a hand in 6 goals across his last 4 league appearances (4 goals, 2 assists).
  • Jose Mourinho has only lost 2 of his 22 games against Arsenal in all competitions (W12 D8).
