Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has urged Mikel Arteta to make a surprise approach for Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

Jordan Henderson would be a ‘perfect’ signing as he boasts the leadership qualities that Arsenal need, says Kevin Campbell.

The Liverpool skipper is under contract at Anfield until 2023, with 392 appearances under his belt in a decade-long stay, and harbors hopes of signing a new deal in the near future.

The Athletic reported last month that talks between Henderson and Liverpool haven’t progressed and that there are other clubs – allegedly Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid – interested in the midfielder.

But Campbell thinks Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta should throw his hat in the ring for Henderson. He insists it would be a better move than going for a more popular option such as Lille’s Renato Sanches.

“He’d be perfect, 100 percent,” the ex-Gunners striker told Football Insider.

“On the podcast [Highbury Squad], we asked the fans whether they would rather sign Henderson or Renato Sanches, and they all went for Sanches.

“But we are always moaning about a lack of leadership. Jordan Henderson is there, he’s got all the leadership qualities you could ever want in a captain.

“And yet they still went for Sanches. Henderson at Arsenal would be fantastic, there is no doubt in my mind about that at all.”

While getting Henderson is a long shot at best, Arteta is on the lookout for a new midfielder. He is reportedly tracking James Maddison, Ruben Neves, Yves Bissouma, Sander Berge, Houssem Aouar, and Martin Odegaard.
