The Villa might struggle to keep one of their key midfielders next summer.

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has admitted Douglas Luiz is yet to reach an agreement with the club over a new deal.

The 24-year-old was a major transfer target for Villa in the final stages of the summer transfer window.

The Gunners went as far as to make a £23m bid for the midfielder on the deadline day. However, it seems their hopes of tying him down to a new contract were far-fetched.

“No news in terms of him extending his stay here, so that situation hasn’t changed. But what I would say is that he’s very focused and has trained well,” Gerrard said on Saturday.

“Am I surprised by the speculation? No, because we have got a young Brazilian player who is a fantastic talent, so I expect this question a lot as the season progresses.

“We want him to stay here, the owners were very strong in keeping him here.

“We didn’t obviously want to lose him on the final day and he has performed very well since and he has trained very well and he is ready to go at the weekend.”

Arsenal have shown no squad problems in midfield so far this season. Given their perfect form at the moment, the Gunners might decide to wait until the next summer to sign Luiz as a free agent.
