The Gunners made two deadline-day bids for Douglas Luiz this summer.

Douglas Luiz has signed a contract extension at Aston Villa amid reports linking him with a January move to Arsenal.

Luiz was among Arsenal’s main transfer targets this summer. However, the Gunners saw Villa turn down their reported £23m offer for the midfielder.

A number of reports in English media claimed Arsenal were planning to join the transfer race for Luiz again this January.

But Villa have now announced they have signed a new “long-term” contract with the 24-year-old.

“I’m so happy,” he said. “I’m so happy in this club and I love this club. I love the people here, the staff and the players.

“I’m so comfortable here and I’m so happy.”

Luiz moved to Villa Park in 2019, ending his unsuccessful spell at Manchester City. Since then, he has become a crucial element in Villa’s midfield unit, making over 100 appearances for the Birmingham-based side.

“I’m so happy because I’m staying here and my choice is here,” Luiz added.

Villa hasn’t disclosed the duration of Luiz’s new deal. However, it will most certainly be enough to end the speculations around his future for a while.

Luiz’s contract extension is good news for the injury-ridden Villa, who sit 16th in the Premier League after nine games. Steven Gerrard’s side will host Chelsea in their next match on Sunday.
