Amid interest from German giants Bayern Munich, Arsenal have moved swiftly to tie down one of their key players to a new deal.
Takehiro Tomiyasu has agreed to a new long-term contract with Arsenal, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The 25-year-old defender has accepted the terms of the new deal and is expected to sign it soon. His current contract at Arsenal expires in June 2025. Talks over an extension began in November.
Late last year, Bayern Munich were credited with an interest in Tomiyasu, but nothing came of it. Arsenal have always viewed him as a valuable player and made his new contract a priority for this winter.
Manager Mikel Arteta is a keen admirer of Tomiyasu’s abilities and has made great use of the Japanese’s versatility, playing him on both sides of the flank and in central defense.
To date, Tomiyasu has made 73 appearances for Arsenal since joining the club from Bologna in August 2021. He has scored one goal, provided six assists, and won the Community Shield title last summer.
The defender has been away representing Japan in the Asian Cup. However, after Japan’s quarter-final loss to Iran at the weekend, he might be available for Arsenal’s trip to West Ham in the Premier League this Sunday.
