Progress is expected from Mikel Arteta’s team this time out after two successive eighth-place league finishes.

Arsenal’s “main aim” this season should be to push for a top-six Premier League finish, insists the club’s former defender Mikael Silvestre.

Arsenal made a woeful start to their 2021-22 Premier League campaign by suffering a shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of newcomers Brentford.

Up next for them awaits the London derby against Chelsea. Considering their poor form, they go into the match as underdogs. Looking at the recent fixture history, however, the Champions League & UEFA Super Cup titleholders suddenly appear as underdogs.

Regardless, the Gunners need to find momentum as soon as possible as things won’t get any easy as the campaign progresses, with a match against defending champions Manchester City and a north London derby vs Tottenham approaching.

“When a team like Arsenal see the top teams spending a lot of money and bringing in quality players, it will worry them quite a bit,” he told MyBettingSites.

“They already had a tough task with having to improve from last season and closing the gap, but this has made it extremely hard for Mikel Arteta and his team to break into the top six this season.

“That must be their main aim this season – to break back into the top six.”
