Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn doubts if the Gunners can make the top four in the Premier League this term. He explains his reasons.
Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn says it would be difficult to see the North London side make the Premier League top four.
The Gunners have blown hot and cold so far this term with three losses and four victories from their first seven Premier League games.
Prior to the start of the season, Arsenal were quite busy in the transfer window. They signed long-term target Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid for £44.5m. They also brought in French defender Gabriel from Lille for around £27m.
Arteta also signed Willian on a free transfer. The Gunners also completed other deals for Runar Alex Runarsson, Pablo Mari, and Cedric Soares.
Despite this, Winterburn told Free Super Tips, as quoted by Football365, that he cannot see Arsenal finishing in the top four this season.
“The first ten games always give a good idea of where Arsenal will finish, they would like to go into the last few games of the season having a chance to be in the top four.
“Losing three of their first six games is not ideal and other teams are looking far better at this moment in time, with Arsenal already having to play catch up.”
“This is the strangest season I can remember for a long time. The league is so congested and there isn’t a dominant team so far.”
“We will know halfway through the season where Arsenal will likely end up, but as a fan I do hope that come the end of the season they have a real chance of finishing in the top four.”
“However, on current form and the way the team is playing I don’t see that happening and Arsenal will drop too many points and the better teams will pull away from the rest.”
With 12 points out of 21 so far, Arsenal find themselves in eighth place and will take on Aston Villa next in the Premier League.
