Martin Keown believes that West Ham have been doing well this season due to the lack of fans at the London Stadium.
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has made a controversial statement regarding the Hammers and their supporters. West Ham United have been doing remarkably well this season and currently occupy fifth place in the Premier League. In fact, David Moyes and his team have risen the fans’ hopes of securing a European spot as the Hammers haven’t played the Europa League since 2016.
According to Martin Keown, West Ham’s recent success is related to the absence of supporters in football stadiums this season. The Arsenal legend believes the players are thriving without the added pressure of the critics.
“Isn’t it interesting how West Ham are doing without any supporters in the ground,” he told talkSPORT. “They are so difficult to please and I hope they have massive grins on their faces now because it’s been a long time coming. When they come back to the ground, get behind the team!
All of the trials and tribulations they’ve had with the ground, how would the fans have been if they’d been allowed in the stadium? David Moyes has been allowed to manage this football club in the way he feels fit and what he’s doing tactically is outstanding and the results they’re picking up are first class. I just find it remarkable that they play their football when they aren’t there.”
West Ham have 10 wins in 20 Premier League matches this season, which makes a good argument for Keown’s case. In fact, they have matched last year’s efforts halfway through the competition. However, the last season went a bit differently. After the return of football in June (without supporters), the Hammers only managed to win three out of nine fixtures.
