The Gunners missed out on the Premier League trophy after a close title race last season.
Arsenal will push to win the “toughest” Premier League campaign in history next season, according to Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners seemed to be in pole position to claim the league title for most of the last campaign. But they eventually lost the race to Manchester City, who went on to complete a historic treble.
The defeat, however, has only made Arsenal hungrier to end their 20-year wait to lift the Premier League trophy. In an interview with Marca, Arteta was asked if he saw his side as one of the favourites to claim the title next season.
“If it wasn’t, I wouldn’t be sitting here. That is our ambition,” the Spanish boss responded.
“We know the difficulty: it’s the best league in the world and next season is going to be the toughest league in Premiership history.
“Why? It already was last year. I’ve been here for 22 years and I’ve never seen a competitive level like that.”
Arsenal are in the market to bolster their squad ahead of the next season. The Gunners are heavily linked with moves for Kai Havertz and Declan Rice, while Southampton’s Romeo Lavia has also emerged as one of their summer targets.
Arteta added: “So much quality, so much organization, so many resources, so many good coaches [in the Premier League] … and now Pochettino and Iraola are coming.
“That’s the level and to win the Premiership you have to be the best. That’s why you have to strengthen.”
