The Gunners lead the Premier League table but still have problems with their squad depth.

Mikel Arteta has admitted Arsenal need more options in their squad for the second half of the season.

The Gunners crashed out of the EFL Cup after an unexpected defeat against Brighton on Wednesday.

Arteta brought in players who were supposed to rest after their hard-fought derby win against Chelsea. But that wasn’t enough to save them from elimination.

“That’s the squad that we have and we have to try to utilise the squad in the best possible way,” the Arsenal boss said post-match.

“We know where we are and we knew the moment we had certain injuries that the squad is already very, very short.”

Arsenal pushed hard to add another midfielder to their ranks at the final stages of the summer transfer window.

The Gunners even made two deadline-day bids for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz. But the Premier League rivals rejected Arsenal’s £60 million offer for the player.

Arteta’s side have already started searching for January targets. According to Daily Mail, the Gunners had held “positive talks” with Shakhtar Donetsk’s Mykhaylo Mudryk.

The Ukrainian winger has a £45m price tag, but his possible transfer won’t satisfy Arsenal’s need for squad depth in midfield. Let’s see if the Gunners would make another push to find a new midfielder this winter.
