The experienced midfielder left Chelsea to join the Gunners on an unexpected transfer.

Arsenal have signed Jorginho to cover for Mohamed Elneny’s absence in their midfield, according to Mikel Arteta.

Following the Egyptian’s m injury, Arsenal immediately started their efforts to add a new central midfielder to their ranks.

Moises Caicedo was Arteta’s first choice for the position. But Brighton rejected two big-money offers from Arsenal for the young midfielder.

The Gunners then completed a £12m move for Jorginho on the deadline day. The Italian star joins Arsenal in their mission to win the Premier League for the first time in 19 years.

“We knew in this market you have to adapt and be flexible and ready for inconvenience. We had a big one with Mo and we needed a player in that position,” Arteta said.

“[Jorginho] is a great character who’ll bring leadership and quality in that position. His intelligence, his personality and leadership skills, he understands our way of playing. He fits really well with what I want to do.

“You have to adapt to the circumstances you have, and now we have improved the squad.”

Arsenal lead the Premier League table with 50 points from 19 matches. Jorginho could make his debut for the Gunners when they travel to Goodison Park on Saturday.
