The Premier League leaders have awarded technical director Edu Gaspar with a promotion.

Edu Gaspar has become the first-ever sporting director at Arsenal.

The 44-year-old Brazilian, a member of Arsenal’s legendary Invincibles squad, has worked as the club’s technical director since the summer of 2019, overseeing some key developments in the process.

As a result, Arsenal have promoted Edu to a sporting director role. The position grants the former midfielder responsibility for all academy activities, along with his existing responsibilities with the men’s and women’s football teams.

“I’m delighted to have this new role which I see as an evolution and consolidation of the way we’ve been working,” Edu told the club’s website.

“We are making good progress in all areas of our men’s, women’s and academy and we are all excited about what can be achieved.

“I look forward to building on the hard work of so many people and helping all of us grow together and enjoy more success, and am thankful for the trust the club has put in me. We move forward together.”

Arsenal won’t be back in action until December 8 when Mikel Arteta’s side play French side Lyon in a friendly. Their next Premier League fixture will be on Boxing Day when they host West Ham United for a London derby at the Emirates.
