Liverpool scored two equalizers but couldn’t stop the Gunners from claiming the three points.

Arsenal defeated Liverpool 3-2 in their Premier League on Sunday. A brilliant home win saw the Gunners return to Premier League’s top spot.

A statement victory?

Arsenal’s disappointing results against the ‘Top Six’ teams continued when they lost 3-1 against Manchester United last month.

However, Mikel Arteta’s men showed they wanted to change that record as soon as the game started.

Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring for the Gunners only a minute into the game. But Liverpool managed to bounce back from the early goal, claiming an equalizer through Darwin Nunez in the 34th minute.

Arsenal continued their attacks, finally restoring their lead just before half-time. Martinelli provided an inch-perfect assist for Bukayo Saka, who nodded home from close range to make it 2-1.

Liverpool looked much better at the start of the second period. Roberto Firmino, who replaced Luis Dias in the first half, converted Diogo Jota’s through-ball in the 53rd minute.

Seeing their lead slip away once more, Arsenal doubled down on their attacks in the final 20 minutes. Mikel Arteta’s men finally scored the match-winner when the referee gave them a penalty for Jota’s careless challenge on Gabriel Jesus.

Saka converted the penalty with a powerful low shot, completing his brace and securing Arsenal’s win.

The Gunners move past Man City once again as they continue as the Premier League leaders. Following a Europa League match against Bodo/Glimt, Arteta’s men return to Premier League to meet Leeds United next Sunday.
