Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been handed his first major setback since taking over at Anfield, as his side crashed out of the FA Cup following a 1-0 defeat to Championship side Plymouth Argyle.
A Stellar Start Tarnished by Cup Exit

Winter pinpointed three players who failed to take their opportunity in the FA Cup tie:
- Harvey Elliott – Despite showing promise in previous games, Elliott struggled to influence the match and was unable to provide the creative spark Liverpool needed.
- Federico Chiesa – Having battled fitness issues since joining the club, he was handed a rare start but failed to impose himself on the game.
- Joe Gomez – The versatile defender continues to struggle with injuries, raising doubts over his reliability in the long term.
Transfer Targets Needed for the Summer
In addition to these underwhelming performances, Winter stressed that Liverpool must address key weaknesses in the squad by bringing in reinforcements. The areas identified for improvement include:
- Center-back – A more consistent and injury-free defender is needed to bolster the backline.
- Left-back – With current options proving inconsistent, a strong addition is crucial.
- Center-forward – Liverpool requires a reliable goalscorer to provide depth beyond their current attacking options.
- Midfielder – A high-quality midfielder would enhance the squad’s balance and creativity.
A Learning Experience for Slot
Despite the disappointment, Slot may use this setback as a learning experience. With Liverpool still competing on multiple fronts, the manager now has a clearer picture of his squad’s strengths and weaknesses. His focus will now shift to ensuring success in the Premier League, Champions League, and Carabao Cup, while planning for key signings in the summer to strengthen his squad further.
