As part of an interview with ESPN FC, one of Argentina’s biggest goalkeeping legends came out to defend Lionel Messi from all his critics.

Lionel Messi has been scrutinized in Argentina for more than a decade already. The elder analysts in Argentine football tend to use Diego Maradona as a measure in order to properly place Messi in history. But for people like German Burgos, these comparisons are not fair because Leo doesn’t have the same teammates.

In fact, the former Atletico Madrid assistant manager is convinced that Messi never had teammates who also took responsibility for playing next to him. All the ones who criticize Messi for not winning a title with Argentina, don’t have a similar reaction with the rest of the players.

Leo is the type of footballer who needs to be surrounded by other great players in order to get the best out of him. German Burgos has a pretty good idea of what hasn’t been accomplished with Messi due to the poor quality delivered by his teammates over the years.

Burgos’ concept of Leo Messi.

There was a time in which German Burgos was believed to be an avid Ronaldo fan and not as much with Leo Messi. However, Diego Simeone is the one who publicly confessed that he prefers a player like Cristiano in his squad. But Burgos never agreed with this, he only kept quiet while ‘Cholo’ said what he said about Leo. Now that he is his own man, it’s about time he can finally speak about his ideas and concepts.

When asked about Leo Messi’s new role in Argentina, German Burgos told ESPN: “I would also like to ask what the other players can offer to him. Bilardo attempted to protect him with a 3-5-2 formation. We always try to find him in order to get him to decide a match. But we also have to look at what the other players do. I will always consider him one of the best players in the world.”
